People usually do leave there pets alone. My cat would just entertain herself outside all day. I knew someone with an indoor cat and he would leave the TV on for it.

Most of my dogs, (I have seven) stay at home. They have toys and beds and spend a lot of time sleeping. A few of them, one in particular, go to work with me everyday. It's their/his job to sit at the reception desk and greet people when they come in to our office. The clients love it, my dogs love it and I love it.

Get an animal sitter. You can not leave a pet in the garden it will escape as well as you can not do that in winter.

Mine are kenneled when I'm not home so that they don't get into trouble while I'm gone. I put a bowl with ice cubes in it so that they can keep hydrated and toys so that they can keep busy. Their kennel is inside in the airconditioning - They are very happy boys :)

Dogs typically sleep most of the day. I leave for work around 7 am and someone is home by 3:30ish to let them out. I don't like leaving them more than 10 hours without them getting a pee-pee break. Don't get two dogs at the same time. Get one and bond with him/her for a while then get a second one if you still want one. If you get two dogs (especially puppies) they will tend to bond to one another first instead of you becoming the most important thing for them. Also if you get a puppy, there is no way he/she can wait all day long to pee-pee. You would have to paper train in a room cause you shouldn't crate a dog for long. General rule is one hour for each month they are. So if a puppy is 3 months old it should not spend longer than 3 hours in a crate and even then that is pushing it.
